Cromwell celebrated the many and varied contributions that make the college special at the annual Foundation Dinner held this Tuesday.

We welcomed back Mrs Cec Fairbanks, who with great dedication served a succession of hungry scholars for 24 years, from 1993 until just last year.

We had a number of alumni returning. And in particular, we had the great pleasure of welcoming back distinguished alumni Ms Susan Buckley to provide an address.

Susan was at Cromwell 1983-85. She was accompanied on the night by her close friend and college contemporary, senior UQ academic Dr Margaret Cook, with whom she shared the corridors of Top Hancock.

Today Susan manages a client portfolio in excess of $33 billion at Queensland Investment Corporation, better known as simply QIC, and dedicates her spare time and energy to mentoring the next generation of business leaders, and women leaders in particular.

In her address Susan reflected on the value of her experience at Cromwell in setting her up for a rewarding career. Susan emphasised the importance of personal leadership, the inextricable link between personal and public leadership, and shared some of the personal values, of courage, conviction, transparency and resilience that have served her well in dealing with the inevitable challenges that arise working in the finance industry.

Susan also shared the great value she has experienced in giving back to community throughout life.

Her thoughts and advice on both professional and personal life struck a chord with students and guests alike.

This was our second Foundation Dinner, having held the inaugural edition last year. It's true that much of what makes Cromwell special are the voluntary contributions made by staff, students and alumni. And so it's our ambition to build the Foundation Dinner up as a important event for the Cromwell community.
